The short story adaptation is sort of the exception in the world of adaptations. Generally, reformatting a previously conceived work involves cutting—picking and choosing the scenes or aspects that can make it into your script and discarding the rest. For short stories, though, it’s the opposite—taking a smaller story and expanding and developing it. This presents a unique set of challenges. How do you add new characters and new scenes and still retain the spirit of the source material?
